Is Adult Day Care a Valid Option?

If you or someone you love is a full-time caregiver, there is an option that you should know about called Adult Day Care.  Perhaps it’s an option that you had heard about in the past, but hadn’t considered pursuing for whatever reason.  If you haven’t given it a very good look before deciding not to go ahead and do it, now just might be a good moment to take a closer look and see what adult day care options are available in your area and what they have to offer both the person coming for day care and for the primary caregiver taking care of that person.

An adult day care facility can either be geared toward medical health services or it can be geared toward socialization services.  If you live in a large metropolitan area of the country, it’s surely the case that there are multiple options of both types available to you; however, if you live in a more rural area, it may be the case that only one or the other is available in your region.  Check out the options before you get too deep into the decision-making process of deciding if it’s a good option for your situation.

Health day care facilities focus on the health aspects of elderly caregiving.  Of course, all day care centers for aging adults will offer general health services such as handing out medications and making sure that the adults in the facility are healthy and safe, but adult day care centers who have a focus on healthcare often also offer services such as physical therapy and cognitive therapy.  These centers are more geared toward somebody who has had an accident or an incident and is in a recovery process or someone who has declined quite far medically and is on the verge of going into a nursing care facility.

Adult day care centers that have a focus on health care are certainly a good option when it comes to bringing an adult in need of supervised care somewhere for the full or half-day time period.  This is a good option for caregivers who either can’t spend the day at home with someone who needs full-time care or for caregivers who recognize that they are better able to take care of their loved one for 60 hours a week and let the day care center help them out by also taking part of the responsibility of care.

Adult day care centers often also offer many social opportunities for the person in care than the limited social opportunities of someone who is fully cared for by a spouse or by an adult child.  Also, having home help come into the home is another option that does not provide much social benefit for an elderly person in need of full-time care.

The adult day care centers that have a more social focus are day care centers where a multitude of activities and events are organized each day.  Sometimes these activities are musical, sometimes art-related, and sometimes as simple as playing a board game together.  Whatever the activity of the moment, the bottom line is that the people who are coming to the adult day care center are not only having fun and staying a little active, but they’re also maintaining friendships and relationships with all the other people who are there each day, including the folks who work in such a center.

Whether you can take your loved one to an adult day care center focused on health care or on social activities, the benefits both for your loved one and for yourself are numerous.  Having some time for yourself can be the essential element to managing stress and emotion at a difficult time in your life.

  1. Great piece of writing! I have a question, has there been an increase or decrease in the number of people choosing health care facilities in the past months?
